THIS Saturday (August 12) the Spooner’s and West Dartmoor Hunt will host its first hound racing and gate jumping competition at Little Highertown near Tavistock (PL19 9EH).
The day promises to be a great family day out for spectators and participants alike and offers a cash prize of £100 to the horse and jockey who successfully clears the highest gate.
The gate jumping kicks off at 2.30pm with the junior class (16 years and under), closely followed by the open class (over 16 years). The gate will start at a height of 2’ 6" for the juniors and 2’ 9" for the open, and will be raised approx two inches with every clear round. Those who knock down or refuse the gate will be eliminated from the competition.
The junior winner will receive a cash prize of £50 with a generous £100 awarded to the winner of the adult competition. Gate jumping is a great spectator’s sport, it is full of fun, anticipation and excitement so go along and cheer the competition on. Anybody can enter, it’s £15 in advance or £20 on the day.
In addition to the gate jumping main event, there will be plenty of other excitement throughout the day, including ferret racing and roulette. Ferret racing is great fun for all the family; you simply choose your ferret, place your bet and cheer them on!
For those non-riding pet owners with a competitive spirit, there will also be dog racing. This will be open to dogs of all shapes and sizes.
The finale to the day will be the hound racing at 6pm. There will be five races so plenty of opportunity to place a bet on your favourite hound and cheer them on. Spooners and West Dartmoor master Henry Bailey will also attempt to hurdle the course.
There will be a variety of delicious food and drink on offer throughout the day, including a BBQ and a fully stocked beer tent. Entry on the day is £1.
